about

"Like some black-cowled Merlin straight out of a Kenneth Anger movie, serial collaborator Daniel OʼSullivan applies his blackened midas to yet another piece of perfect darkness scraped from the bowels of some forgotten Albion." - Vice

Mothlite is the brainchild of Daniel OʼSullivan. The London-based composer and multi-instrumentalist known for his subterranean exploits under various occult mediums (Ulver, Sunn O))), Guapo, Æthenor, Miracle, Miasma & The Carousel of Headless Horses, Grumbling Fur). Dark Age is the follow-up to 2008ʼs ʻFlax of Reverieʼ (Southern Records), ʻan album propelling listeners down the rabbit hole into a world of wilderness and weird that is at once English and entirely otherʼ is entitled ʻDark Ageʼ. An illustrious collection of future-music contrasting Flaxʼs outward looking homage to nature and focusing inwardly towards matters of the heart. Like the Coil lyric that inspired it, this is the ʻDark Age of Loveʼ, documenting the metaphysical implications of leading secret lives. OʼSullivanʼs voice has transgressed from an instrumental augmentation to a strong, formidable lyrical presence, documenting the fetishes and paradoxes of love and loss.

Drawing on the cloistered impressionistic Englishness of Talk Talk and Kate Bush combined with the stately pop melancholy of Tears For Fears and Dead Can Dance, Mothlite gaze into a future of epic proportions. Influences are accessed without contrivance and are reassembled in an incendiary mixture of dexterity and authenticity. OʼSullivanʼs songwriting collaborations with The Big Pink and Ulver are apparent in Mothliteʼs keen sense of production and lush atmospheric arrangements.
